About

My name is Derek Miller Hurtado, and if I had to define myself as something, it would be as a “visual storyteller.” Enamoured by fashion and its ability to weave dreamlike worlds from gossamer threads, I embarked on my professional journey in the fashion marketing field, believing it would allow me to marry creativity and pragmatism in a balanced manner.

However, I have realised that the ideas and notions I encountered from both personal and professional perspectives were not necessarily as they seemed. Therefore, I now strive to focus my work on breaking down traditional currents of thought and reconstructing them into more honest and encompassing iterations of themselves that are not only more truthful to my individual self but also illustrate the plurality of the world we live in.

My personal relationships with spirituality, sexuality, colonialism, migration, and creativity, which make up my identity, play pivotal roles in the themes covered within my work. From a philosophical perspective, I aim to create tension by juxtaposing contrasting imagery and topics to produce innovative and stimulating outcomes that display the contradictory nature of the human experience.
