Qianhui Sun (孙千惠)

Communication (MFA)

About

As a designer and artist, Qianhui Sun primarily explores themes of environmental and animal protection, social inequality, feminist issues, and sensory studies. Her approach involves interdisciplinary creation, speculative design, and storytelling, blending different realms to address complex challenges. She obtained her BA in Communication Design from RMIT University in 2022 and completed her MFA in Communication at the Royal College of Art in 2024.

She creates art approaches that address real-world challenges by integrating existing research with storytelling. For example, her project “Above Ripples” explores the future impact of ocean pollution on seabirds. By depicting the post-pollution scenario of seabird species and their ocean habitat from seabirds’ perspectives, the project aims to raise awareness of these ecological challenges and inspire action.

She also explores themes of cultural symbolism, the impact of globalization, and identity construction. These themes are explored in the project “Hidden Loong” which integrates science fiction, cryptozoology, and world-building, it investigates the symbolic significance of dragons in Chinese culture and their role in shaping Chinese identity amidst post-colonial globalization and technological advancement.

Qianhui is currently using a dehumanized perspective to offer a unique, comprehensive, and balanced view of environmental issues. Her goal is to highlight the urgency of addressing ecological damage and the interconnectedness of all living organisms. By combining contemporary scientific research with artistic creation through interdisciplinary collaboration, she engages multiple senses to enhance understanding and aims to drive broader social change.
