About

I am Xiaomeng Du, born in a small town in China. My interest in memory stems from a happy family background. From a young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of family. My great-grandmother had a very poor memory. Before she passed away, the phrase she said to me most often was, “If I see you on the street, I won’t recognize you.” And I would always reply, “It’s okay, as long as I recognize you.” After her passing, this conversation replayed in my mind, leaving me deeply saddened. I have always regretted not cherishing the everyday moments I spent with her that were once so abundant.

My practice is rooted in accessible abstract video art, which delves into questions surrounding memory, perception, and the construction of imagery. I aim to connect with viewers through abstract storytelling and everyday life scenes, encouraging them to delve into their subconscious and memories in order to engage with my visual narratives.
