Artemis Zih-Jie Weng
About
Driven by a passion for storytelling and innovation, Artemis Zih-Jie Weng is an experimental new media artist and XR creative technologist at the forefront of immersive storytelling and spatial computing. Her work spans various disciplines, including audio and music production, world-building, and engaging simulations. She is particularly fascinated by the themes of dreams, realms, and social justice, and she continuously explores new mediums to express these ideas.
Artemis graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, with a BA in Design in 2023. During her undergraduate studies, she developed an interest in the intersection of technology and human experience. She worked with WebGL and immersive head-mounted VR games in Unity, using the Oculus Quest 2 to create virtual environments that explored the connections and communication across cultural, linguistic, and temporal barriers. This work laid the foundation for her explorations into how digital spaces can transcend traditional boundaries and foster understanding and empathy.
In addition to her digital work, Artemis has explored the physicality of art through projects that investigate the proximity between realism and eeriness. She examined this concept through deviations from plaster and silicone face prosthetics, using the shrinkage of alginate molds to explore the liminal space between the real and the uncanny. She also experiments with photogrammetry techniques, bridging the physical and digital realms and showcasing her playful approach to art-making.
Continuing her journey at the Royal College of Art for an MA in Digital Direction in 2024, Artemis further refined her artistic vision and technical expertise.
Her cinematic adaptation of the Unreal Engine 5 game, “Consciousness in The Landscape,” was selected for the IRCAM Forum 2024 at Césure in Paris and earned the Innovate UK Immersive Tech Awards 2024 Runner-Up in the Sensory category, where she handled all aspects of audio and music production. In her graduate CGI animated film “Serendipity: Beyond the Mist,” she delved into themes of societal and cultural identity, as well as self-discovery. The film premiered at Outernet, London, on July 24th, 2024, and was showcased from August 2nd to 5th, 2024. It was also featured at the BBC Television Centre’s Big Screen at the Artist Showcase 2024. Throughout her master’s program, she primarily used Unreal Engine 5 to create playful, immersive experiences that captivate audiences.
With a deep interest in spatial computing and a playful yet profound approach to art, Artemis is dedicated to empowering art through emerging technologies and inspiring new ways of thinking about the intersection of art, technology, and society.
