About

Jungwoo Kim is a media interactive installation artist, and media interaction designer. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Design and a Master’s degree in Media Interaction Design in South Korea, she pursued a second Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art (RCA). Her studies focus on exploring interaction methods that allow the public to engage with the completion of artworks in various forms, along with the behavioural approaches related to these interactions. Her works primarily aim to convey social messages through the audience’s active participation, where the messages are understood and internalised via the most closely related interactions.

In her works, she utilises creative coding and physical computing, considering why each interaction is necessary.

Her recent work, Echo Chamber, is based on the concept that the human eye symbolises our position and a window to view the world. This work offers an experience where the audience can explore the echo chamber effect and the process of online radicalisation through social media by moving their eyes and heads. By changing their position, viewers naturally focus on keywords symbolising specific ideologies, become immersed in, and ultimately find themselves trapped in a particular belief system.

In her previous research, she created artwork where she placed tools that people naturally use in their daily lives, encouraging the audience to discover hidden interactions. When the audience performed interactions associated with these tools, related animations were triggered.

Her other works include projects where she adopted various forms of interaction, such as a work that recognises the viewer’s facial expressions to provide opportunities for emotional communication with an animal, and a work that contains interaction inspired by childhood plays. She continuously inquires what kind of experiences and memories the audience can derive from these varied interactions.
