About

Chang Liu is an artist and animator. Her work delves into the exploration of how traumatic memories can be reinterpreted across various media, highlighting the diverse understandings and interpretations of the same narrative by AI, a psychotherapist, and the storyteller herself. Through her art, Chang investigates the theme of self-discovery through traumatic experiences, inviting audiences to embark on an introspective journey to feel, explore, and understand themselves.

In her latest piece, a three-minute animation, Chang employs Blender and Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) to create a surreal visual style that oscillates between reality and dreams. This artistic choice reflects the nature of recalled and narrated memories, which are no longer the true past but new entities interwoven with emotions, subconsciousness, and subjective judgments. By maintaining a deliberate distance between her narrative and the audience, Chang’s work allows viewers to project their own stories and discover personal insights.

“It connects with everyone by touching on common themes like our shared traumas and the search for meaning in life.”

The advantage of this narrative distance is that it facilitates a unique form of engagement, where the audience can both relate to and feel detached from the content. This detachment enables a deeper reflection on their own experiences and traumas, fostering a profound connection with the work.
