Lei Chen
About
Lei Chen (b. 2000) is an interdisciplinary artist who explores themes of the body and existence through her work. Her artistic practice encompasses a wide range of mediums, including filmmaking, photography, 3D modeling and moving images, with a particular focus on creating immersive experiences, seeking to provoke thoughts and dialogues in the ever-changing world.
With a background in philosophy, Lei deftly intertwines the visceral and intellectual aspects of her themes with elements of art, technology, and philosophy. As an observer and explorer of the human condition, she is keen on multi-dimensional thinking and forward-looking vision, proposing new perspectives on existential themes and actively responding to the challenges brought about by social change.
“How will digital beings imagine human life experiences, particularly those deeply embedded in the female body, like menstruation?”
In her recent work Menstrumythos: the Rite of Regeneration (2024), Lei explores the question through an experimental dance film. Blending choreography with digital art, the film offers viewers a unique experience of the menstrual cycle, reflecting on themes of body, identity, technology, and the blurred boundaries between human and machine in the post-human era.
