Zhang Rongkai is an internationally exhibited research-based artist working at the intersection of art and technological sciences. Zhang Rongkai’s work is diverse, including installations, videos and performances. His works are intuitively expressed in a “critical” keynote, and he uses his own personal coordinates to integrate technology into narratives, and emotional expressions, exploring how to create a future of coexistence in the post-future.
His latest works combine emerging technologies with cultural reflection and social change, exploring the intersections of coexistence, collective memory, interspecies entanglement, and the scale of life.
The Microbial Gut Brain is a microbiome information processing installation. Inspired by the Hidden image of Chinese medicine, the project uses bioelectric signals as technical support to explore whether the human microbiome possesses the functions of the brain.
CYCLE is a time measure-mentinstallation based on life rhythms of microbiomes. By translating data that quantifies changes in each life stage of the microbiome into chimes of different tones,this time installation is createdthat is rooted in life cycle rhythms rather than numerical measurements. The project aims to explore how the biorhythm with traditional time scales,sparking reflections on the nature of time itself.
TELLING is an interactive installation-based performance that restructures the method of fortune-telling into collaborations among fortuneteller, customer, and tools. The collaboration can be viewed as process of sculpting, through which the interaction among the three helps the customers to explore the truth (personal answers) from their personal perspective.
The project is a provocation that challenges the comodified fortune-telling within the neoliberal context and transforms the practice of fortune-telling into art therapy.
