Ying Tian
About
Ying Tian (b. 2001) is a Chinese digital designer and multimedia artist. A graduate of Donghua University in Shanghai, she is currently studying at the Royal College of Art. By integrating technology and art through video installations, 3D animations, and AI model training, she creates participatory art experiences.
Her artistic practice centres around the question: “How should we understand and express our identity?” She delves into the intricate relationships between memory, identity, and technology. Through extensive research on social and cultural issues, she explores the interdependence between people and technological media in modern society and the dynamics between individuals and communities in future societies. Passionate about writing and scripting from a subjective perspective, she intertwines personal experiences with her creative work.
Her work Know Thyself uses self-ethnography to explore the impact of digital collective memory on Generation Z. It examines how nostalgia, influenced by algorithms, challenges the self-identity of digital natives. This work aims to make the audience reflect on the authenticity of identity within nostalgic emotions and the interplay between reality and the virtual world. It explores the possibilities of expressing identity by “looking back” and “looking forward.”
