Jake Buckley
About
Hello,
I’m Jake, an artist deeply engaged in unraveling the sticky relationship between technology and ideology. My diverse body of work spans sculptural, graphical, and fashion mediums, including editorial design, typography, game design and plenty of 3D queasy’s.
While studying at The Royal College of Art, I embarked on an in-depth exploration of cognitive capitalism. Using Unreal Engine, I developed an immersive video game that deconstructs the mechanisms of global capitalism, crafting a haunting world that seamlessly transitions from lush natural landscapes to stark, mechanical environments as the first-person player interacts with the space.
My year at RCA culminated in a multifaceted series that included wearable garments, a fashion shoot, and a lookbook. Through this work, I investigated the pervasive influence of technology on our ideologies, focusing particularly on latent spaces, the complex underpinnings of AI and machine learning, and fashion as media.
Drawing inspiration from thinkers such as Mark Fisher, K Allado McDowell, and Dr. Daniel Felstead, I crafted a weird fiction narrative that served as the conceptual foundation for the garments. These pieces, inspired by an epistemology of cryptids and monsters, led me to collaborate with a fashion designer, utilizing a custom-trained stable diffusion model that influenced the design of the wearable garments.
