Nandal Seo

Visual Communication (MA)

About

My name is Nandal Seo, and I am a multidisciplinary visual communicator from Seoul, South Korea. My recent works focus on food, particularly on how the boundaries of our identity play out on the dining table— in other words, the “creolization” of food. My visual languages include photography, moving images, art directing, graphic design, and extend to gathering people through participatory events or workshops.

One of my recent obsession is ‘dumplings’. The name exists like the soft dough, embracing everything from gyoza to apple turnovers- and this highlights ambiguity, a fugitive power that has always existed beside us as a spectrum. So in my research project <We *KNEAD* to talk>, I learned to make dumplings from friends around the world. The workshops and gathering such as <Green grape kimchi>, and <Potluck: Some reasons for eating ssam (lettuce)>, I have also focuses on blurring/expanding the boundaries we have through food.

In the end, I believe that what we open our mouths to and chew ultimately breaks down into molecular units, becoming the tiny grains that make up our beings. My journey will continue with the new possibilities and methodologies I have found, so stories will unravel on table and plates, our mouths will be full of words and food, and undefinable identities will be digested to become our molecules in the end.

I am also is part of the studio spillll(@s_p_i_l_l_l_l.studio), a collective of 4 ESEA (East / South-East Asian) queer women creatives who gathered to bring a salad of cultural heritage, ecology, genders, spirituality, and communal narratives to the table through visual storytelling, editorial work, video/photography, identity design, and art direction. We aim to work with like-minded others in preservation, activism, academia/education, small/local brands, and food based research and many more.
