Riya Panwar

Visual Communication (MA)

About

My name is Riya Panwar, an innovative visual artist and communicator. Specializing in alternative photography and creative direction, I delve into the chemistry of photographic materials, focusing on the concept of imperfection. My work seeks to create harmony between the science of making and the art of creating. I am dedicated to reducing the use of toxic methods while exploring new mediums for visual creation and communication, incorporating making as a central part of my research.

I pursued my MA in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art, where my research emphasizes the pivotal role of photographic techniques in visual storytelling and concept building. I investigate the interplay of visuals and words, crafting narratives that blend graphics, text, and image-making. My work is characterized by experimentation, a celebration of imperfection, and a relentless drive for creation. For me, making is a form of research, offering insights into fundamental principles beyond mere knowledge.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Communication from Symbiosis Institute of Design in Pune, completing the program from 2016 to 2020. After graduating, I worked as a communication manager and creative strategist at advertising agencies in Mumbai and Pune.

As both an artist and designer, I strive to harmonize the structured approach of design with the liberating nature of art. By blending these disciplines, I explore their seamless interaction within visual communication, constantly pushing its boundaries through experimental tests. My passion for sustainable creative practices drives me to make art and design more accessible and less intimidating. You can view my work and stay updated through my website and Instagram.

My work has been featured in Vogue India, homegrown.in, and has been internationally showcased in Tokyo at the Shibuya MODI building, Women Alternative Photography Community by Elizabeth, Jatt Artist Discovery Interview, and the Symbiosis II group exhibition by the London Alternative Photography Collective at Four Corners.
