Sally Hsiao
About
Hi, I am Sally. I am an illustrator and designer living in London, Shanghai, and sometimes Taipei. My practice often uses drawing to bridge memory, history, and space. With a deep appreciation for the lovely things around me, I capture the world in a colorful and fun way.
My recent project is inspired by my mother’s journey as a 12-year-old girl working in a Taiwanese hair salon in the 1970s and 1980s. I collected stories from my mom and others familiar with that time and space, combining them with archival research to create a cohesive narrative.
‘Good Hair Day’ uses my mom’s journey to portray the lives of young people during a period of change, when many left their hometowns to seek opportunities in the big city. This publication delves into personal transformation and social change, with each page revealing a history of resilience, love, and dreams. I hope to retrace, preserve, and create a collective narrative for those who lived these stories, and for others to glimpse into lives from a time beyond, thereby comprehending the history of Taiwan’s past & present-day attitudes. The project was also shortlisted for the Varley Memorial Awards 2024.
This page shows selected pages and prints from the publication. If you are interested in the full book plan, please get in touch with me through my email.
