About

Shengfei Li (Winnie) is a student from RCA Design Futures. She graduated from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in China with a bachelor’s degree in public art, specialising in Spatial Conceptual Design and Graphic Design students with a foundation in environmental and architectural design, public art and graphic design. She is passionate about future-oriented design. Shengfei’s work aims to create possibilities for the future of mankind through design and research, providing implementable design solutions to enhance human well-being, meeting the needs of specific groups in society.

Shengfei’s project is about China’s one-child policy has profoundly altered family dynamics, especially for Generation Z, who are left alone with the responsibility of caring for their aging parents. This pressure is intensifying as China’s population ages and its labour force shrinks. Within a decade, Generation Z will be the mainstay of the labour force, facing enormous pressures from work and life. Spatial design can respond to these unique socio-cultural challenges by creating environments that understand the specific needs and changing goals of Generation Z.

The inspiration for the project came from Shengfei herself, a girl from a one-child family. The core focus of the project is to help China’s Generation Z (the generation born between 1997 and 2012) achieve work-life balance through innovative spatial design. Achieving this balance is not only an aspiration of Generation Z in China, but also a requirement for the well-being of Generation Z. This is where the opportunity lies for the future of spatial design in China to have a transformative impact. Creating environments that meet the diverse needs of this group improves productivity and quality of life.

Specifically, the project aims to explore and design interior and architectural spaces that can flexibly adapt to the changing needs of Generation Z, in order to address the unique challenges, they face in the context of the post one-child policy.
