Joshua Siebert
About
My name is Joshua Siebert and I am a multi-disciplinary designer.
I have a background in industrial design and art history and have worked at companies such as Honda, Away, Point Card, Owlet, Normann Copenhagen, and more. My work has been shown at Milan Design Week, Oxford University, Washington DC, and London Design Festival. Additionally, I am listed on a number of patents from my time at university and through professional positions.
Over the past few years, my work has become more focused on questioning how we use objects in our daily life. I am often playing with our relationships and perceived assumptions regarding a product to create new possibilities and interactions. I find that I am far more interested in creating new interpretations of products and affecting larger shifts into how we think of and view objects rather than create smaller incremental adaptations.
While at RCA, I mostly worked on fashion. I aimed to create new methods of wearing clothing which questioned the status quo of a t-shirt and trousers. These garments in turn helped provoke questions about the body, identity, and space. The six piece collection was displayed at the graduation show and received very well.
In addition to my fashion collection, I started a magazine called Nunan Paper, which has been a goal of mine for a while. It consists of photos I have taken while traveling and is paired with text psychoanalyzing cultures and how their specific world view has led them to create environments and products unique to their culture and region. More to come. I also worked on a project I call “Future Cameras” which attempts to redefine how a camera looks and functions based on why and how we take photos in the modern era. This is far more speculative and is a series which I hope to finish soon.
