True Blue

Developed by Khushi Vishnoi as part of her MA Design Products, True Blue (2024) is an innovative Mixed Reality platform designed to bridge the gap between the public and the maritime industry. This platform offers real-time shipment information using Augmented Reality, providing detailed insights into the maritime journey, including environmental conditions and maritime news. Additionally, its immersive Virtual Reality simulation allows users to experience life aboard merchant vessels, fostering empathy for seafarers by revealing their daily challenges and contributions.

Shipping is vital to global trade, with 90% of world trade—valued at over $14 trillion USD—carried by sea. Despite its significance, the maritime industry and its 1.89 million seafarers and 200,000 vessels remain largely invisible to the public, a phenomenon known as Sea Blindness. Historically, cities grew around ports, keeping the maritime industry visible. Today, modern ports are isolated, and containerization speeds up goods movement, making shipping nearly invisible to the public. This disconnect fosters indifference toward the challenges seafarers face, from isolation to hazardous working conditions.

By enhancing public awareness and appreciation of seafarers, True Blue aims to drive advocacy for their well-being, improve policies, and foster a deeper connection between the public and the maritime community.

True Blue was showcased at the RCA MA Design Products Exhibition 2024, held at RCA Battersea Campus.

It was also featured at the Queen’s Anniversary Trust Conference in Liverpool and received a Special Mention at the MarineInsight Young Innovators Challenge.
