Phill Pezo
About
Phill Pezo is an aspiring Latin American industrial designer based in the greater New York area. He has a diverse range of interests but his specialties include product, social impact, biomaterials, furniture, and objects. He has experience in product and furniture design and was part of the RCA Sustainability Lab. He is a large observer of the world around him and pays close attention to detail. Creating from the roots of his inspiration from nature and his care for craft, Phill uses organic forms to connect humans to nature and products as a way to break away from the rectilinear world we live in.
Purposeful and sustainable topics and practices are large priorities for Phill, as a way to focus on unique audiences and topics that tend to lack design attention. His strong attention to research creates user-centric designs with organic and functional style, synchronizing humans to nature and products for various topics and audiences.
Phill’s independent research projects investigate how the skateboard community can benefit the homeless population. During his research, Phill found that most of the homeless homies visiting Southbank Skatepark had a prior interest in the skateboarding world. He also found that, unlike the sidewalk, the skateboarders would be seen interacting with them through laughs, story sharing, or sharing water, etc. HOMIES is a project that aims to elevate this relationship and story through the use of repurposed skateboards into objects for the homeless.
Within his other focus on sustainability, he found that the majority of household items are hard or impossible to recycle and eventually end up in landfills. Phill challenges this through his use of biomaterials and repurposed materials, seen in his projects Eggy Lamp and Cardboard Barrel Chair. He experiments with a range of materials, some including repurposed cardboard and skateboards, as well as hemp paper, hempcrete, and eggshell ceramics to connect humans to nature and products in a sustainable way.
