About

This is a pillow created for insomniacs.

Why do people suffer from insomnia? From a biological perspective, it is because we cannot relax our bodies. One effective method to combat insomnia is the 4-4-4 breathing technique from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), This technique is widely recognized by the medical community as it helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for relaxation and rest, thereby helping individuals relax their bodies and fall asleep effectively.

Currently, there are two main ways to practice this technique: under the guidance of a professional healthcare provider, which can be time-consuming and impractical for many, or using CBT-I apps. However, a report indicated that nearly half of the people using these apps gave up the exercise due to a lack of self-discipline. To provide a more convenient and effective way to practice “box breathing,” I plan to create the “Breathing Moss” pillow inspired by the entrainment effect.

The core of this pillow consists of latex and inflatable PVC. When the user turns on the switch and lies on the pillow, the inflatable part begins to inflate and deflate according to the rhythm of CBT-I deep breathing exercises. The human body, driven by the entrainment effect, starts to breathe deeply in sync with this rhythm: breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold. After ten minutes, the inflator automatically turns off, and the user can go to sleep.
