About

Katie Ko is a Womenswear Designer based in London.

Often taking inspiration from the impressionist movement, capturing the optical effects of light and exploring the space between fantasy and reality. Examining the intersection between fashion and art, Ko begins by printing her drawings and paintings onto fabric, which then transforms into wearable art. She pushes the boundaries of fashion, textiles and fine art; employing various techniques in each piece of work, exploring the craftsmanship and extensive details behind couture through sustainable practices.

Ko grew up in Hong Kong, moved to London in 2018 to complete a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from London College of Fashion, graduated BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Ravensbourne University and MA Fashion at the Royal College of Art.

“Chrysanthemum Dew”

What an impressionist sees and how they interpret it can often differ greatly. Their mind immediately reconstitutes elements of the world around them into a new scene, but nonetheless is only an approximation of reality. Ko often takes inspiration from the impressionist movement, capturing the optical effects of light and exploring the space between fantasy and reality. Whilst exploring the connection between her subconscious choices as an artist and her culturally hybrid upbringing, to which the interrelation of the two became the key stimulus to this collection. Beginning with sketching the Chrysanthemum flower (菊花 Júhuā), which is often consumed as a tea in Chinese culture, and one that Ko particularly enjoyed growing up in Hong Kong. At times she felt a disconnect with her own culture, being taught Western culture in school and raised by Chinese parents. Throughout her journey of creating this collection, she’s reconnected with her Chinese roots, but also an admiration of Western art that greatly influenced her as a young artist; translating the textures, brushstrokes and movement within the drawings onto garments and infusing these principles of impressionism into fashion.
