About
Cady Lee is a multidisciplinary artist who specialises in sculpturewear and accessories. Cady primarily explores concepts related to transformation and the transition from one state to another. Particularly focussing on exploring the contradictions of emotions.
During her MA studies, she developed a strong interest in eyewear and sculpture, creating her first eyewear collection, “Guardian.”
“Guardian” explores the mysterious aura of ancient Chinese ornaments. Since ancient times, the mythological creature carved on the ornaments has been believed to be a guardian who helps people ward off evil forces. Thus, she aims to investigate the animalistic sensuality and sense of deterrence inherent in the sophisticated assembly of ancient Chinese ornamentation. She collaged the ornaments, including the claw-like hairpin “Chai” and the hook and ring details, with the demeanour of the mystical beast.
Though fusing modern technology and materials with the delicate shape of Chinese ancient ornaments, she hopes to create lenses that pay respect to the intricate craftsmanship of Chinese ancient ornaments and bestow power and luck on the wearer who immerses themselves in the guardian spirit of this work.
Her second project, “Accept and Decline,” is a sculpture that serves as a cathartic ceremony for documenting her journey of self-acceptance. In the crucible of self-discovery, she confronts her ties to the insatiable needs for mirroring while depicting the ambiguity and malleability of our human experience—moulded, melted, and reforming.
The wax balloons serve as a figurative medium for fetters, whereas the transparent bodies represent the remaining negative space. Melting them down unravels the moments of bondage and self-criticism, dissolving the entanglement of her ideal self and revealing her true self. From the molten remnants of the old, a protean form emerges—the once struggle-now obsolete, a self yet unknown.
