About

Xiang Lai(Haymitch) is an emerging fashion designer whose work explores the complex interplay between cultural heritage, personal identity, and societal expectations, particularly within the context of East Asian society. Her latest project, titled “East Asian Woman”, delves into the multifaceted struggles faced by young women growing up in East Asian cultural backgrounds.

In “East Asian Woman”, Xiang Lai presents a soul bound by societal expectations and family pressures, lost in the pursuit of so-called success. Through a digital visual language, the work showcases the protagonist’s struggle in a modern urban setting: striving to conform to traditional values and parental expectations on one hand, while yearning to find her true self on the other. This internal conflict is reflected in the anxiety brought about by perfectionism, self-doubt caused by emotional suppression, and the difficult process of seeking meaning in a mechanized life.

The project aims to provoke viewers to contemplate deeper issues of cultural inheritance, personal growth, and the impact of social norms on individuals. It also reveals the challenges of identity and self-realization faced by the younger generation against the backdrop of globalization and the digital age.

Her work combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge digital techniques, reflecting the tension between heritage and innovation that is central to her artistic vision.

Through her designs, Xiang continues to challenge conventional notions of identity, culture, and self-expression, offering a unique perspective on the complexities of modern life for young East Asian women.
