Jacob Wellsbury

Innovation Design Engineering (MA/MSc)

About

I am an engineer and designer with experience in early stage startups focusing on sustainable materials. My focus during IDE has been on understanding how the lens of design can be focused on fabrication, construction, and the trades to allow practical sustainability with new aesthetics.

My graduate project STACKS embodies this through an exploration of future, modern and past masonry. With the result being an algorithm and tool which thinks like a stonemason, allowing planning and real-time guidance when building with irregular stone in construction and repair of dry-stone walls. This outcome was a result of design research focused on immersing myself within the trades, as such time was spent training as a bricklayer, mason, and dry-stonewaller.
