Amy Middlemiss
About
Amy Middlemiss is a textile designer specialised in print and material exploration. Her current collection explores how fabric, specifically wool, can be manipulated through print and dye processes to enhance the substrate’s receptivity to create multilayered fabric ‘collages.’
Each piece emphasises its individuality in the textured results created on the material, which is determined by its interactions with the printing paste. Emphasising the possibilities of making by hand in screen printing entails a process of deconstruction within the surface to showcase different qualities, textures and finishes uncovering something entirely new.
Amy’s practice is driven by an appreciation for serendipity in craft, the unpredictability of processes and the dynamic responsiveness of materials. These factors are purposefully encouraged in her work under a controlled environment allowing nuances to occur and be responded to. Shapes within her work draw inspiration from natural forms in landscapes while still retaining a high sense of abstraction.
Supported by the Orla Kiely scholarship.
