Bingqing Li
About
I am Bingqing Li, a textile designer who specializes in combining weaving with mixed media. I am dedicated to exploring the expression of color, texture, and craftsmanship.
Through textiles, I explore and depict the fading civilizations of ethnic minorities, trying to re-present some of the precious civilizations and crafts in the form of design. In my design process, I have been exploring the qualities that attract me to civilizations and capturing them by constantly exploring the interactions and combinations of various yarns and culturally specific materials, using different weaving techniques.
My intention for this series is to bring the viewer, through my perspective, to the fruit and vegetable market in the remote town of Shuhe, Yunnan Province, China—a primitive, natural place far away from the hustle and bustle of the city—and to see the splendor of a few civilizations that may be disappearing from the corners of the world. I do not intend to focus on the historical significance behind the clothing and accessories worn by the local people. Rather, I hope to experience and feel the uniqueness of the civilization I see through the objects that fill people’s daily lives; to perceive their existence and continuity. I use color and pattern combined with embroidery and weaving to enhance the visual and tactile experience of the textiles, breathing life and emotion into each piece.
As a designer, my goal is to give each piece of textile a unique story and soul through continuous innovation and exploration, combining traditional civilization with modern design. I believe that through this fusion across time and space, more people can understand and cherish these precious cultural heritages, as well as allow these cultures to continue to shine in modern society.
