About

As a mix media artist and designer, Camila Barvo explores cultural phenomenons within a soft sculptural and video medium. Using natural materials, she creates relationships between embroidery, natural dyes, and fibre/fabric manipulation as experimental forms of expression and powerful languages to document experiences that revolve around femininity and identity. As a Latinamerican maker, material identity deeply informs her practice. Growing up in Medellín, Colombia made her deeply aware of the power in craft and the richness in cultural material knowledge of the country. Passionate about the value of craftsmanship in society and driven to expand the boundaries of craft through contemporary art, she believes it’s essential to reincorporate responsible artisan practices into current forms of expression for the conservation of a sustainable cultural heritage.

Her current work revolves around hair being a storehouse for emotional memory and identity. Using wool, rose and lotus fibres she magnifies hair gestures through textiles. Exalting the craft of braiding and knotting she creates a link between hair filament manipulation and textile fibre manipulation. Her braided soft sculptures evoke the volume, wild and overgrowing quality, beauty and yet eeriness of hair.
