Hyunju Roh
About
Hyunju Roh is a mixed media artist who connects personal experiences and observations with natural phenomena and life processes. Before studying in London, she studied textiles, metals, and industrial design in South Korea. She worked for many years as a commercial space designer, exploring the relationships between humans and objects within spaces, which led to her interest in the sensibility and experience of objects.
Her work at the Royal College of Art focuses on biomorphism in objects based on her personal context. This began with her childhood observations of the treatment and healing process of skin wounds, and her imagination of incomplete regeneration. These life processes are interpreted and recreated as traces of struggling vitality. Ordinary daily life is metaphorically represented by furniture and everyday objects, which are dismantled, reassembled, and transformed into unpredictable forms. This recalls the beauty of self-regeneration and change in living beings, while also suggesting a positive perspective on the physical and mental maturation process.
