About
As a textile artist, I explore the depths of life through various materials, weaving them into narratives that reflect my unique perspective. My journey in art is profoundly influenced by my academic background, where I majored in both Chemistry and Business before attending the Royal College of Art. This interdisciplinary foundation equips me with a broad worldview and prepares me to innovate and lead in the textile industry’s emerging materials sector.
For me, textiles serve as a versatile medium, a language through which artists and designers can convey profound thoughts and emotions. My recent work focuses on silk, chosen for its historical and cultural significance. Inspired by the rich history of turquoise and the Silk Road, I integrate traditional techniques such as printing, dyeing, and embroidery to juxtapose the nuances of handcrafted art with modern technological advancements.
Art and design are my mediums for introspection and expression. This is particularly evident in my final project, a heartfelt tribute to my grandmother, Jin Qiuyue, whose name, meaning “golden moon” of the Mid-Autumn Festival, symbolizes familial unity. The project draws inspiration from the Rorschach inkblot test, using the butterfly motif—created through symmetrical paper folding—to represent the tumultuous emotions I experienced during my mourning. By utilizing cocoon silk fans, I blend butterfly imagery with the golden full moon, expressing my profound longing and likening her selfless sacrifices to a silkworm’s exhaustive cocooning process. The golden mean, a central element in my work, symbolizes the lesson of cherishing the present moment, a wisdom gleaned from this deeply personal journey.
