About

Nandini Garg is a textile designer specialising in natural dyes and materials, adept at blending traditional techniques with digital software. With extensive craft experience and a history of collaborating with artisans, she deeply understands weaving, printing, and natural dyeing. Her approach produces distinctive and efficient designs, showcasing her skill in the craft.

Her project, ‘Transience,’ explores the concept of movement and displacement. It delves into how individuals change and adapt to new circumstances, drawing on Shimura Fukumi’s idea from her book “The Music of Color” that children acquire “colours” based on their surroundings and influences. Migration exposes people to diverse experiences, leading them to adopt new ‘colours’ in their identities.

Every colour represents a certain part of her journey, and she uses these textiles to narrate her story. Handwoven with a blend of wool, cotton, and pineapple fibres, these textiles utilise dip-dyeing techniques to enhance the storytelling, bringing depth and meaning to each piece. These textiles are envisioned to be used as primary fabrics for fashion or as accents like pockets and cuffs, reflecting the fluidity and resilience of human experiences.
