About

Sophie Boylan is a textile designer specialising in sustainable embroidery for fashion. In order to tackle the microplastic pollution caused by the sequin industry she began experimenting with plant-based alternatives in the bio-lab. As the traditional plastic sequin is made of petroleum-based microplastics, Sophie wanted to reimagine this with a sustainable alternative.

Through experimentation with recycled flower petals for colour/texture and cellulose as her bio plastic base, she has begun implementing bio sequins into her final samples.

Themes of nature and femininity are integral to this project, which delves into the symbolism and history of Swan Lake and the evolution of the corset, culminating in the creation of bio-sequins. This corset represents a personal journey from girlhood to womanhood, embodying the delicate interplay between natural elements and the feminine form.

The journey from girlhood to womanhood is often marked by a deeper understanding of one’s identity and place in the world. The creation of this corset, infused with personal and symbolic elements, mirrors this developmental path. Each design choice, from the selection of materials to the thematic influences, encapsulates milestones and revelations encountered along this journey.

In essence, this project weaves together the rich tapestry of nature, femininity, and personal growth through the lens of Swan Lake and the corset. It celebrates the transformative journey of womanhood, honouring both tradition and innovation, and ultimately creating a garment that is as symbolic as it is meaningful.
