About

The name of my project is called A bio-based edible textile of the future. The concept of the project is that with the increase of the world population, the overuse of the earth’s resources has led to some serious environmental problems, and the future global resources are also facing a shortage. Therefore, through this project, I want to challenge the boundaries of traditional textile use and provide a sustainable, edible alternative to solve the food and resource problems of the future and meet the needs of humanity. Promote sustainable development and environmental awareness.

The material I choose is seaweed in excess of nature, because seaweed is an edible natural resource and natural pigment. Due to various kinds and different colors, seaweed can be applied to textiles to reduce the use of chemical dyes and reduce environmental pollution. They grow fast and are renewable, which can reduce the demand for traditional agricultural resources and help to reduce the burden on the environment. Algae growth needs to absorb carbon dioxide, and can improve water quality, has a positive impact on the Marine ecosystem, and seaweed contains a large number of nutrients needed by the human body, helping to meet the nutritional needs of the human body.

I take the growth cells of seaweed as my inspiration for modeling. In the future, when resources are scarce, people will actively seek for materials and textiles that can grow and eat quickly. I express this concept by combining the unit structure of seaweed cells to simulate material growth.

In the face of the shortage of resources in the future, it is hoped that through this speculative design, on the one hand, people can stimulate their thinking about the impact of excessive consumption of earth resources on environmental problems, and on the other hand, people can make more sustainable lifestyle choices in the future and pass on the concept of environmental friendliness.
