Introduction

Design Products explores current and future real-world challenges that incorporate high levels of technical delivery and creativity. With constant changes in society and technology, both the challenges and potential ways to address them are always evolving. We are always challenging the idea of ‘What is a product?’ with an aim to develop new design disciplines and practices that can address global issues in ways that are effective, appropriate, and make our designed world a better place to inhabit.

Our students

Ankita Khanna is a multidisciplinary designer with experience in visual communication and sustainability. Ankita Khanna
Dora Hayat is a French industrial designer who graduated from ECAL with a Bachelor of Industrial Design (2020) and from the Royal College of Art with a Master of Design Product (2024). She also joined the French incubator of Arts et Métiers (2022-23) to develop and market her end-of-study Bachelor project. Her work focuses on rethinking and developing everyday product for sustainable living. In her design process, she aims to create long-lasting products by developing flexible and interactive objects that adapt to the user’s evolving needs, incorporating repairability and recyclability. She likes to combine mechanical systems, pleasure of use and pure aesthetic language, with a focus on details and quality, to empower users to interact with the product. Her background in industrial design enables her to find simple technical and manufacturing solutions, to imagine products that will accompany users for a long period of time. Dora Hayat

Po-Yen Wu is a designer with industrial design background. With the interest of conceptual design, he sees product as a medium to communicate issues to offer public a different perspective to see the world. Currently, he rethink the problem behind mass production and raised an idea of what if products are “grown” instead of “manufactured”. Through a fictional story, he designed a series of furniture that grows. The idea is to raise public’s attention of wasting resource and to imagine a more sustainable world through interacting with his design. During his journey at RCA, he focuses on exploring the possibility of product. His design starts with designing daily object and use them as a way to reply different issues. He believed design can not only solve problems but also playing a role to raise questions. Po-Yen Wu
Huda Kalash is a Palestinian product designer, influenced by her upbringing in a rural family of craft makers, observing her grandmother's embroidery and knitting and her father's carpentry and calligraphy. She pursued Industrial Design at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design In Jerusalem, graduating in 2019, and subsequently worked at the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit, West Bank. Her commitment to preserving and documenting Palestinian crafts led her to write craft manuals for UNESCO and teach design thinking and textile technologies at Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem before coming to London to pursue a masters in Design Products at the RCA in London, UK. In 2020, she founded the brand نَـ, Nah, named after the prefix commonly used to denote collective action in the present in the Arabic language. The work of نَـ seeks to emphasise justice in collective making, asserting that no product is the result of individual work. Her approach to design, grounded in research and collaboration, aims to bridge the gap between past and present by considering the interplay between maker, material, environment, and end user. By engaging with stakeholders and drawing on diverse disciplines, she seeks to create a holistic framework that honours tradition while embracing innovation and sustainability. She strives to create a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected dynamics within the realm of making and design. Her overarching goal is to establish a holistic social and economic system that empowers makers and educates both herself and the end users of the products. This endeavour involves exploring various research avenues, including historical and contemporary methods of making, to inform a hybrid approach that considers the maker, the environment, the material, and the end user. By delving into storytelling, archival research, and collaboration with historians and craftspeople, she aims to develop a nuanced understanding of the intricate relationships between these elements. Ultimately, she seeks to pave the way for a more sustainable, inclusive, and culturally rich approach to design practice. Huda Kalash

I graduated from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in Visual Communication and am currently pursuing a Master's in Product Design at the Royal College of Art in the UK.
